ينحدر اليازوري من يازور إحدى قرى الرملة بفلسطين ،من أسرة دينية وصل أبو محمد اليازوري إلى مصر سنة (439 هـ/ 1036 م)، وكان يهدف من وراء ذلك، إعادته إلى منصبه السابق بتولي قضاء الرملة، فاستطاع أحد كبار رجال الدولة من تقديم أبي محمد اليازوري لأم الخليفة بتولي ديوانها فتَّم له ذلك، فارتفعت مكانته وتولى ديوان أم الخليفة، وفي سنة (441 هـ/1049 م) اسند إليه قاضي القضاة ولم يقف عند ذلك فحسب بل عُهدَّ له منصب الوزارة سنة (442هـ/1051م)، بعد أن أثبت جدارة في كل ما تولاه، الوزير اليازوري من الوزراء الأقوياء الطموحين ومن أرباب الأقلام نال عدة ألقاب لم يجمع ذلك لأحد من قبل القضاء والدعوة و الوزارة منحه الخليفة لقب الوزير الأجل والمكين، وسيد الوزراء، وتاج الأصفياء، وقاضي القضاة، وداعي الدعاة، وعلم المجد، خالصة أمير المؤمنين وخلع عليه وبلغ هذا الوزير من سعة النفوذ وعظم الحظوة أنه ضرب اسمه على السكة مع اسم الخليفة المستنصر بالله، وكان من وزراء التنفيذ المميزين .
